* WHAT...The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particles pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Red or Unhealthy category. * WHERE...Northeast Minnesota. * WHEN...Until 11 PM CDT Tuesday. * IMPACTS...Some members of the general public may experience health effects. Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, may experience health effects. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Light winds will allow existing wildfire smoke across northern Minnesota to linger into this evening and overnight. Concentrations are expected to be highest along and near the shores of Lake Superior. An additional round of heavy surface smoke from wildfires across southern Canada is expected to transport into northern Minnesota on Tuesday.

Instruction: Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion. The general public should limit prolonged or heavy exertion. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as outdoor burning, and use of residential wood burning devices. Reduce vehicle trips and vehicle idling as much as possible. Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors.

This includes the Tribal Lands of the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation, the Red Cliff Band, the northwestern area of the Lac du Flambeau Band, the Bad River Reservation, the Bois Forte Band, Lake Vermilion area, the Fond du Lac Band, the Grand Portage Reservation, the St. Croix Band in Burnett County and the Mille Lacs Band, Hinckley, Lena Lake, East Lake and, Big Sandy Lake areas. Other locations including the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Madeline Island. This also includes the Boundary Waters eastern and central area. * WHEN...Through Wednesday morning. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - A slow moving front will bring heavy rainfall which may lead to rapid runoff and flash flooding this afternoon through Tuesday night.
